Explore the fascinating story of how Sandwich, Massachusetts became the heart of American glassmaking in the 19th century.
In 1825, Deming Jarves, a prominent Boston merchant, and William Whitney, a Sandwich native, founded the New England Glass Company in Sandwich. The town's abundant supply of clean sand, access to timber for fuel, and proximity to major shipping routes made it an ideal location for glass production.
Under the leadership of Jarves and later his son-in-law, Edward D. Libbey (who would go on to found the Libbey Glass Company), the Sandwich Glass Company quickly became one of the most successful glassmaking enterprises in the United States. The company specialized in producing high-quality pressed glass, hand-blown glassware, and intricate cameo glass.
1825 - 1888
The Sandwich Glass Company Era
Sandwich glassmakers were known for their innovative techniques and artistic flair. They developed new methods for producing pressed glass, which allowed for the mass production of intricate designs at affordable prices. The company also became renowned for its cameo glass, which featured layered colors that could be carved to create stunning relief designs.
One of the most famous Sandwich glass innovations was the "Sandwich Blown-In-Mold" technique, which allowed for the production of uniform, high-quality glassware with intricate patterns. This technique revolutionized the glassmaking industry and made Sandwich glass highly sought after both in the United States and abroad.
Despite its success, the Sandwich Glass Company faced increasing competition from larger glass manufacturers in the late 19th century. In 1888, the company ceased operations, but its legacy lived on through the exceptional glass pieces it produced and the skilled craftsmen who trained there.
